Joel Turner & The Kids

How tempting to sit back and let others use their creative efforts to entertain us? Let's face it - it's easier. Flick on the tele, turn on the computer, watch the YouTube clips, put on the headphones and get lost in our Ipods.

We become spectators, listeners - we become the audience for other people's creativity. Not that this is a bad thing. On the contrary, it's positive, unless of course that's all we do. In that case we'd be missing out= we'd be handing over our power.

When we don’t use it, we lose it.

Within our hip hop music program, arts workers and music practitioners of Champion Sound and Sweet Freedom use the positive influences of urban music culture to facilitate young people to take control and explore their capacity for innovation and creativity.

The team includes experienced rapper Mark Skins, hip hop artist and community development practitioner Ben as well as former world champion beat boxer Joel Turner who became a household name following his weekly appearances on Australian Idol and his subsequent release of a number one chart hit.

The experience and abilities of each of the team have proven to be immense assets to engaging with these young people and helping them to use their imagination, develop new ideas and express themselves.

Our Time

Tapping into this pool of creativity produces results that are thought-provoking, insightful and esteem building. It also demonstrates the strength and capacity of young people to face the future, share their thoughts and “have a go”.

Here they are – young guys and girls finding their way. Hasn’t been an easy life so far for them but they’ve been picking up interesting sights and useable skills. They have their social workers and psychologists but that kind of support won’t be around forever. Nor should it be. These are gutsy kids who have a growing recognition that ultimately the future is in their hands. The more creative they are in their approach to it, the more power they are likely to reclaim and the more satisfying their lives will subsequently be.
Here is an album of their songs. This time, they are the entertainers, the creative ones, the ones with something important to offer, the ones who are taking charge.

Those of us who get their hands on this CD – it’s out turn to be educated and entertained.
Luckily for us, we are now their audience.
